Since its publication, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit has sometimes been referred to by academics and educators as a "lesbian novel". Winterson rejects the label, expressing her dislike for the idea that "straight fiction" is for everyone but novels and media with gay characters or any queer experience are only for queer people.

Winterson has written several books that explore gender, sexuality and the boundaries of physicality and imagination, including Sexing the Cherry and Written on the Body. Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit was also adapted for television by Winterson herself in 1990, allowing the story to reach a wider audience. Many books later, Winterson would go on to write her memoir in 2011, the aforementioned Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? Though she is married herself, Winterson rejects the idea that the institution of marriage should be something women are expected to strive for, as is often portrayed in the media. When she married Susie Orbach in 2015, Winterson wrote her own vows that better reflected her views on partnership, taking issue with the "for richer, for poorer" in standard wedding vows. To her, the usual wedding vows spoke more of a life sentence than any kind of liberation from loneliness or celebration of each other's love. Instead, Winterson's vows included the following promises: "I promise to respect you: the you that is you; the you that is not me; the you that is not us. I promise to stand by you in the world. I promise to delight in you." Winterson later had her vows written by calligrapher Stephen Raw and hung them on her bedroom wall – she likes to sleep next to her promises.
